Our vision is robust local news and strong, informed communities.
Every Australian deserves access to balanced reporting on the issues that shape their lives and communities. Gazette is stepping in where local news has diminished or hasn't made the leap to digital, covering essential conversations around infrastructure, education, public services, and the environment.
Our reporting is primarily produced for the social media platforms and online channels where our audiences are spending their time, with an emphasis on video, graphics, and skimmable newsletters that inform and engage.
Our Editorial Values
As a civic news organisation, our journalists focus on accessible, factual reporting to help communities stay informed, build connections and defend against misinformation.
Accountable
We are accountable, so we strive to tell the truth and we will tell you if we get it wrong.
Focussed
We're hoping to build local news around the country, but for now we're focussed on building our first titles where local news is in decline or hasn't moved to digital, where there are essential conversations around infrastructure, the environment, cost of living, education, and public services, and where we can find great digital talent.
Editorially
Independent
We preserve standards of editorial independence, with a firewall between our funding sources and our editorial process that ensures the integrity of our journalism. We don't accept any funding
from political organisations.
Digital
First
We will publish our work where our audiences are, and when they move to new platforms or technologies, our brands and journalists will follow.
Reliable and
balanced
Our reporting is rooted in facts and the insights of the communities our newsrooms serve. We'll never manufacture “both sides” to our stories because we don't give equal weight to falsehoods / junk science.
Grounded in
Community
We will prioritise staff and contributors who live in the communities we serve, and we remain committed to sourcing stories to reflect the diverse country in which we live.
Our Business Model
We’re proud to have the support of an incredible group of philanthropic backers who share our mission to combat misinformation, elevate public interest journalism, and address environmental challenges. This seed funding has enabled us to start delivering free, accessible reporting to Australian communities.
Our goal is to build a sustainable social enterprise supported by a diverse mix of revenue streams, including advertising, affiliate marketing, reader donations, and events.
With this model, we’re able to keep Gazette’s journalism free and accessible to all, while maintaining the strong editorial independence that’s core to our mission.
