Our vision is robust local news and strong, informed communities.
Every Australian deserves access to balanced reporting on the issues that shape their lives and communities. Gazette is stepping in where local news has downsized or hasn't made the leap to digital, covering essential conversations and and under-reported issues around infrastructure, education, public services, climate and the environment.
Our reporting is primarily produced for the social media platforms and online channels where our audiences are spending their time, with an emphasis on video, graphics, and skimmable newsletters that inform and engage.
Our Editorial Values
As a civic news organisation, our journalists focus on accessible, factual reporting to help communities stay informed, build connections and defend against misinformation.
Digital
First
We will publish our work where our audiences are, and adapt to new platforms as our audience moves. We use digital tools to connect authentically with our communities, building genuine relationships with the people we serve.
Reliable and
balanced
Our reporting is rooted in facts and community insights. We don't fall into the trap of "both sides" journalism because we don't give equal weight to falsehoods or junk science.
Grounded in
Community
Our staff and contributors live in the communities we serve, and we remain committed to sourcing stories that reflect the diverse country in which we live.
Accountable
We are accountable, so we strive to tell the truth, correct our mistakes transparently, and maintain trust with our readers.
Focused
We want to build digital local news around the country. For our first titles, we're focusing where local news has downsized or hasn't moved to digital, and where there are hot local debates over over climate change, disinformation, and elections - places where quality reporting can grow our audience and serve communities most effectively.
Editorially
Independent
We preserve standards of editorial independence, with a firewall between our funding sources and our editorial process that ensures the integrity of our journalism. We don't accept funding
from political organisations.
Our Business Model
We’re proud to have the support of an incredible group of philanthropic backers who share our mission to combat misinformation, elevate public interest journalism, and address environmental challenges. This seed funding has enabled us to start delivering free, accessible reporting to Australian communities.
We are now working on building a sustainable social enterprise supported by a diverse mix of revenue streams, including advertising, affiliate marketing, reader donations, and events.
With this model, we’re able to keep Gazette’s journalism free and accessible to all, while maintaining the strong editorial independence that’s core to our mission.
