Gazette is building a new kind of local media company for Australia.
We produce free, high-quality news for communities across Australia, distributed through email, social and video. We’re growing quickly, with multiple titles already live and a clear path to scale.
At a time when misinformation is on the rise and media businesses are under pressure, we’re focused on building a sustainable model alongside a news product that is informative, relevant and grounded in the communities we serve. We place particular emphasis on clear, evidence-based reporting on issues like the environment and climate, cost of living and services where local coverage is often limited.
About the role
We’re hiring a Commercial Director to lead and build Gazette’s revenue function.
We’re looking for someone with strong sales capability and the instinct to build, someone who is excited by the opportunity to shape a commercial model that can help Gazette thrive.
This is an opportunity to shape an innovative commercial strategy for digital-first brands that operate both independently and as a network, spanning local and national audiences. In this role, you’ll spot, define and test commercial products across partnerships, sponsorships, branded content and creative production.
You’ll work closely with the Publisher and Editorial Director to build a commercial engine that is ambitious, creative and aligned with the mission and audience.
What you'll do
• Build the commercial product: Work with the Publisher and Editorial Director to define and productise Gazette’s commercial offering across newsletters, social, video, branded editorial and integrated partnerships, and more.
• Sales and network partnerships: Lead and close key network-level deals, working with agencies, brands and national partners, and owning the commercial pipeline end-to-end.
• Local direct sales: Build and scale a local direct sales function across Gazette’s mastheads, including hiring, structuring and enabling a team to drive revenue in local markets.
• Studio and branded content: Lead the sale of, and help shape, Gazette’s branded content and studio offering, working with the team to develop capabilities over time.
• Execution and delivery: Oversee delivery of campaigns and partnerships, ensuring quality and client satisfaction.
What we’re looking for
• Strong track record in advertising sales, partnerships, or media revenue roles
• Existing relationships with media agencies, brand marketers, and/or direct clients
• Experience selling integrated campaigns, sponsorships, or branded content
• Comfortable working both direct-to-client and through agencies
• A hands-on operator who is willing to roll up their sleeves and test, iterate and build
• Comfortable in a startup environment – speed, ambiguity, defining and testing product offerings and scaling what works.
• Good judgment around brand, audience and editorial integrity
• A clear, direct communicator, with a collaborative spirit.
